The Healing Power of Community

In the web of human existence, we are bound together not by spider silk, but by community. Wired for connection, we have an innate need for togetherness that spans from a survival instinct to a deep desire of the soul. And as healers—building our livelihoods around personal, often intimate human connections—the necessity of finding our tribe is even more critical. Here’s why.

Humans Are Built for Each Other

Whether healer or not, it is a simple fact of your biology that you require a community. Unlike many mammals, who stand and walk within hours of their birth, human infants emerge absolutely dependent on others. And when we connect with one another, our brains release oxytocin, a hormone often referred to as the “love hormone.” It fosters trust, empathy, and a sense of connection—an evolutionary response to community that keeps us alive.

On an emotional level, too, community provides us with a sense of belonging and support. It's in the arms of our tribe that we find solace during challenging times and celebrate our greatest joys. Without this emotional safety net, we risk feeling adrift in a sea of isolation.

Burdens Are Lighter When Carried Together

For healers, fatigue and burnout can have a major impact on your practice. Since your calling is naturally so emotionally demanding, it's vital that you form close relationships with other healers who understand your work. Your tribe can provide emotional support, lend a helping hand, or simply offer a listening ear, lightening the mental load and offering welcome perspective and reassurance.

Shared Creativity Compounds Exponentially

When you're part of a community, you gain access to a collective of knowledge and ideas, and this diversity of thought can be a powerful catalyst for creativity.

The power of your mind is already tremendous, but when creatives work together, the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts. As you form a creative community of healers, inspiration for how you can expand your services multiples, and your ability to support your clients’ wellness becomes nearly infinite.

Connected Healers Form an Automatic Network

As helpful as these psychological advantages are for healers, they do you no good if you go out of business. From a practical standpoint, working and serving in a community is a huge boon to the business element of your practice, as it offers a built-in network for collaboration and cross-promotion.

When you find your tribe, you can help each other grow by sharing one another’s skills to clients who might benefit from them. A counselor might recommend your yoga classes to a client, and you might recommend an herbalist in your community to someone in a class. Healers of all kinds can pool their talents to offer holistic and comprehensive services to those they serve, allowing for a deeper level of healing, while expanding their reach and impact.
