How to Find the Right Workspace for Your Healing Practice
If you’ve ever had to take an important call from the parking lot or meet with someone hurting in a cold and sterile office, you know how important your environment is to your ability to serve your clients.
Whether you’re a counselor, a yogi, a spiritual guide, a massage therapist, or any other type of healer, the energy of the space in which you work affects your practice—and your clients’ experience. As a truly holistic wellness practitioner, you have to consider these five questions about your workspace:
1. How much space do you need?
Your workspace should be a reflection of your unique practice, and how much space you have matters. For a yoga instructor, a larger area may be necessary to accommodate classes, while a counselor may need a more intimate setting for one-on-one sessions.
In some cases, different services you provide could call for different square footage, making a flexible or multi-room environment the best choice for shining your inner light.
2. What amenities do you need?
Depending on your trade, some amenities are basic requirements for performing your work. Massage therapists need tables; yoga instructors need mats; counselors and coaches need seating.
These basic amenities are essential, but it's the thoughtful extras that truly create an inviting and nurturing environment. If you want to make your clients (and yourself) feel at home, you also want to equip your space with some cozy comforts—hot coffee, soft furniture, beautiful decor, etc. Amenities play a powerful role in creating a conducive environment for wellness practices.
3. What part of town is convenient for the people you serve?
Think carefully about the accessibility of the location and whether it suits your target audience. Unless you do your work in a trailer, location is the only thing you can’t change about a space.
It doesn’t matter how effective your methods are if you practice in a neighborhood that doesn’t need them. And no amount of marketing or promotions will bring people through your doors if they show up and there’s nowhere to park. Making it easy for your clients to reach your workspace and experience the transformative power of your services is crucial to building a practice that works.
4. Do you crave a community?
Navigating healing work alone is challenging. Sometimes we need guides to hold safe spaces for us and provide the tools to find our path. And sometimes we just crave being around others who understand our healing journeys.
If you’ve been practicing out of your home, you know doing this work in isolation can be taxing. Seek out a space that offers connection with other healers from various backgrounds to give yourself opportunities for networking, collaboration, and shared growth.
5. What is your budget?
A sustainable financial strategy, while not always our favorite part of our practice, is essential to building a practice that supports your own total wellness. Depending on your needs, budget can be a major limiting factor in your workspace search. To maintain financial balance, we recommend you don't spend more than 25% of your revenue on your workspace.
