the biggest myths about energy Healing & intuitive readings
If you’ve ever heard your wacky aunt talk about her spiritual life coach, you might find it tempting to dismiss that holistic practice as “woo-woo” nonsense. After all, if the coach isn’t a licensed therapist or traditional medical professional, how can you trust their work?
While it’s always important to vet your healing pros for experience and credentials, Western medicine isn’t the only model that can be beneficial to our health. In many cases, your wacky aunt may be on to something. But we still don’t want her fruit cake recipe.
Two of the most frequently misunderstood healing modalities in the holistic wellness community are energy healing and intuitive coaching. Often dismissed as “too crunchy,” these methods can have enormous benefits for practitioners who approach them with an open mind.
Whether you’re a healer looking for the language to explain your services or a curious potential client, we’ll demystify these practices by tackling some of the biggest myths around them and setting the record straight.
Energy HealinG
Myth: Energy healing is just “woo-woo” with no scientific basis.
Fact: Energy healing works by interacting with the body’s electromagnetic field, which is a widely recognized aspect of human physiology. Our cells generate electrical activity, and this creates an electromagnetic field. Common medical technology like EEGs and EKGs, which measure brain and heart activity, relies on this principle.
Energy healing modalities such as Reiki, Healing Touch, or acupuncture aim to influence this field to promote balance and wellness. While research on specific energy healing techniques is ongoing, the basic principle—that the body’s energy field plays a role in health—is supported by science. Energy healing leverages this field to address blockages or stagnation, helping your body do what it’s already designed to do: heal itself.
Myth: Energy healing only works if you “believe” in it, so it’s basically a placebo.
Fact: While openness can enhance the experience, energy healing works on physical and energetic levels, often providing benefits regardless of belief.
Energy healing practices physically stimulate your body’s nervous system and promote circulation. In fact, acupuncture has been shown to release endorphins and reduce inflammation, which can alleviate pain and improve physical function. Similarly, Healing Touch has been used in hospitals to help patients manage post-surgical pain and reduce anxiety.
Skeptics often turn to the placebo claim whenever they can’t explain (or don’t like the explanation for) why something helped. But in the end, if you feel better, you feel better—period.
Intuitive Readings and Coaching
Myth: No one can predict the future, so intuitives are just scam artists.
Fact: There’s a big difference between intuitive coaches and infomercial fortune tellers. Fortune tellers claim to predict the future by providing definitive answers. Their approach implies a fixed destiny, alluding a set future that’s simply waiting to unfold. Intuitives, on the other hand, are less interested in what might happen one day, and more interested in helping you tap your greatest potential right now.
The root word of “psychic” is psyche, Greek for soul. The psyche refers to the non-physical parts of yourself, like your personality, mindset, and behaviors. While intuitive coaches might appear to use similar tools as “fortune tellers,” their role is to help you access your own inner wisdom to gain clarity and navigate life’s challenges.
Myth: Intuitive coaching is too vague to actually help me.
Fact: Intuitives combine deep inner exploration with actionable, real-world strategies. As sensitive people with heightened perception skills, they’re able to provide out-of-the-box insights about current circumstances, underlying emotions, or patterns that may be influencing your path. The ultimate goal is to help you make clear, purposeful decisions and take meaningful steps forward.
How does it work? Every coach is different, but they’ll usually start with questions to learn more about your goals and current challenges. Next, they’ll offer reflections and guidance to help you to uncover blocks you might not have been aware of. Then help you create an actionable plan to bring your ideal vision into physical reality: setting goals, developing new habits, or building accountability structures to stay on track.
Through this process, intuitive coaching ensures your plan is not only practical, but also aligned with your own inner values and aspirations.
