Essentials for Designing a Holistic Workspace

tidy beautiful holistic workspace with green walls

Let’s say you work a classic, 40-hour-per-week schedule. That means you spend about 2,080 hours — over a third of your waking life — at work over the course of a year. And if you’re an entrepreneur or self-employed wellness practitioner, that number is likely higher. So shouldn’t your work space help you care for your whole being?

Your office space should be more than just a setting for your services; it should be a sanctuary that fosters healing, balance, and inspiration — for your clients and yourself. You can only do your best work when your own needs are met as well, and that includes physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs.

It’s Gotta Be Cozy

It sounds simple, maybe even obvious, but the place where you spend 35% of your waking hours should be physically comfortable, and for many of us, it isn’t. Cold, fluorescent-lit office spaces designed for corporate suits simply do not support your overall well-being, and as part of a holistic health effort, they can really only make your life harder and more stressful.

Consider investing in comfortable furnishings for yourself and your clients, from plush chairs to soft cushions to warm blankets. And trade out the harsh white overheads for softer lighting. Make sure there’s somewhere to store food for the day too, and prioritize feeding and hydrating yourself even if you have back-to-back sessions. You’d be surprised how much cozy lamp light and enough water can ease the tension of a long day of caring for others.

Balance the Social and the Solitary

Holistic healing often involves deep emotional work, so it's essential that your space can accommodate various emotional needs. You connect with your clients every day, and that can be draining if you have nowhere at work to enjoy a moment of solitude. Carve out a physical space, as cozy and comfortable as the one you provide for your clients, in which you can take time to yourself to relax and reset.

At the same time, being the one providing care session after session can feel lonely.

Just as necessary as personal space is space to socialize, and even better if it’s with other wellness practitioners. Humans thrive in community, and ideally, your workspace should support building that community so that you can be surrounded by others who have walked similar paths.

Get Your Head Right

As a healer, so much more goes into your practice than just the time spent in sessions with your clients. You have to prepare, set up, review notes, reflect, and develop wellness plans for them as well. That’s why you need your holistic office space to stimulate your mind and inspire creativity.

Look for a space that motivates you without distracting you. Surround yourself with beauty, but not clutter. Keep lighting and decorations clean, intentional, and inspiring. And avoid the distraction of a messy space or even too much tech. To get your head right for your healing practice, a tidy and well-appointed space is just the ticket.

Fuel Your Spirit

Wellness practitioners have difficult jobs, but one of the many rewards is that your work is closely linked to your own spiritual well-being — you don’t have to leave your soul at the door.

So stock your space with inspiring books on wellness, spirituality, and personal growth. Crystals, art, and plants can add natural beauty and promote tranquility and harmony. Create a sacred space where clients can connect with their inner selves and find peace amid life's chaos, and let your holistic office space be a sanctuary for you too.
