6 Ways to Get Things Done (for Right-Brained People)

The human mind contains multitudes.

Since these multitudes rarely fit perfectly into circumscribed boundaries, it’s important not to limit ourselves to any single label, whether that’s the introvert/extrovert spectrum or the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or the Enneagram. But our souls crave self-knowledge, and these imperfect categories can still serve as useful tools in our search for a better understanding of ourselves and how to navigate the world.

For healers and creatives, one of these tools is the left-brain vs. right-brain binary, a  framework based on the idea that different areas of the brain are responsible for different cognitive functions.

Under this model, left-brained people are more logical, analytical, and detail-oriented. They often gravitate toward mathematics and science and love critical analysis, problem solving, and systematic thinking.

Right-brained people are creative, artistic, and intuitive. They tend to think more holistically and are often passionate about manifesting their dreams. Healers, creatives, and spiritualists often feel a resonance with the warmth, emotion, and fluidity of the right brain.

A right-brained inclination can pose challenges around productivity and organization. If you find it difficult to stay on top of your tasks and goals because your mind constantly drifts to imaginative and creative pursuits, these strategies may help.

1. Try Mind Mapping

Right-brained folks tend to think in a non-linear, holistic, and visual manner, making mind mapping an ideal tool to organize thoughts and tasks. Write down your main goal in the center of a sheet of paper. Then, branch out with related tasks, ideas, and concepts. This visual representation can help you see the interconnected parts of the big picture, making it easier to prioritize and tackle your to-do list.

2. Use a Planner

Right-brained people often resist structure, but a planner can be the secret to your strength. Like mind-mapping, a planner’s visual representation of your schedule allows you to see tasks and commitments at a glance. We recommend color coding your tasks based on priority, deadlines, time commitment, or even level of interest. The key is to create a system that speaks to your creative spirit.

3. Do Fun Tasks First

One challenge for right-brained healers and creatives is staying engaged with tasks that feel mundane. To combat this, prioritize the tasks that genuinely excite you. Start your day with joy and fun, and you’ll likely make enough progress to motivate yourself to keep checking off tasks even as they become less thrilling.

4. Leverage Quick Wins

If you thrive on creativity, use this to your advantage. Keep a list of tasks that you can complete in less than 20 minutes. When a short burst of inspiration strikes, you know where to put your creative energy to really make an impact.

5. Don’t Do It Alone

Humans are hard-wired for community. If you're struggling with a particular project, reach out to a friend or colleague. Connecting with your community can often transform a dreaded task into an exciting collaborative project. And if you hire an expert to help, you’ll free up your time and mental energy for the work that feeds your creativity, filling your own cup and helping you better show up for your wellness practice’s clients.

6. Find the Right Space
